Poetry Power! is a poetry writing / language appreciation program for elementary and middle school students. Through this unique writing experience, kids get to create poems based on their own perceptions of the world. Students and teachers alike learn the craft of writing free verse poems, with special emphasis on: * the use of the five senses * metaphorical thinking (with a focus on simile, metaphor and personification) * imaginative leaping (the crafting of literary images) * the musical rhythms inherent in language(alliteration, repetition, etc.) After writing their poems in class, the students have an opportunity to read them aloud, accompanied by musical instruments, played by anyone in the class who volunteers. The instruments serve, as well, as a way of including some students who may be too shy to read their poems, but who still want to join in the fun. Sometimes classroom teachers organize a poetry reading, inviting parents and friends who celebrate the children’s work; often these readings become an annual event at the school. In Praise of My Hands Oh, Hands! You are my dearest pal. Because of you, I can touch the raspberry and aqua petals of spring flowers. Because of you, I can rub off the ivory tears on my face. Whenever you are embarrassed, you stuff yourself into gloves or pockets. Whenever you are angry, you crumple up in the corner of my hip. Oh Hands! You are my dearest pal. Thank you for whispering in my darling ear, the world is fun and good. -Arianna Moultrie, 3rd grade |
